Biomass and Bioenergy Research Infrastructure

The scientific BBRI activities are focused on biomass – biochemical and thermochemical conversions – for the production of biofuels, chemicals and other biomaterials inserted in the following research sub-platforms (sub-RIs):

  • Sugars (biochemical conversion of biomass)
  • Thermochemistry (thermochemical conversion of biomass)
  • Microalgae
  • Sustainability Bioenergy
  • Analytical Sciences for Biofuels

The training activities will be directed towards professionals working in the biomass and bioenergy markets and master and PhD students, aiming at increasing the number of bioenergy expert professionals in Portugal.

Several technical and R&D services are offered to the scientific community and industry upon request. The quality of the services provided leverage on the team 25 years of experience, in R&D for new bioenergy technologies (lab and pilot scales) and on technical analytical capabilities. They include: access to laboratory and equipment facilities, technical courses, technical consultancy, analytical services and biofuels certification.

The dissemination activities will promote the BBRI R&D work, training activities and services, increasing the public awareness on the technological challenges and the achievements in the field of advanced biofuels, biomass and bioenergy.
