NEW PUBLICATION – LNEG POLICY BRIEF – Competitiveness of Portuguese Lithium
In order to decarbonise the world economy, we need to accelerate the current pace of use of minerals resources. Lithium is one of these minerals whose demand will rise with the expected increase in electric mobility. Portugal is known to have significant reserves of lithium in the worldwide context, in parallel with the EU strategy to internalise industrial value chains. As such, we urgently need to analyse if, and under which terms, lithium extraction is competitive as well as sustainable in Portugal. What are the ongoing exploitation projects locations under analysis? What are these regions socio-economics benefits and environmental costs? This policy brief is an initial contribution to this discussion.
