A “flower” from a vanished sea.
This Crinoid (Echinoderms) fossil is beautifully preserved. It lived about 470 million years ago in. the bottom of an Ordovician sea. It was collected in 1905, by Nery Delgado, one of the pioneers of the Portuguese geology, in the Valongo region (SE of Oporto). f his is a good example of the value of the old scientific collections whose wealth allows the discovery of new species to continue nowadays. This specimen allowed creating a new Family (Delgadocrinidae) and a new genera.
