According to UN, the world’s cities occupy only 3 % of the earth’s land surface but are responsible for 60-80 % of energy consumption and 75 % of carbon emissions. Moreover, the Renovation Wave for Europe aims to at least double renovation rates in the next 10 years and ensure that renovations lead to greater energy and resource efficiency. By 2030, 35 million buildings could be renovated, and 160,000 additional ‘green’ jobs could be created in the construction sector.
Naturbuild project answers to the demand of qualified workers in an emerging activity within the construction sector. It is a course for workers and installers, that deals with all stages of green roofs: installation, maintenance, and deconstruction.
Objectives and results:
The objectives foreseen in this initiative are:
Global awareness module: training to establish a common basis for all professions involved in the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) building process, providing an overview of the state of the art. At the same time, it will help to raise awareness of NBS and the benefits it brings to building performance, urban climate, and biodiversity.
Installation module: specialized training according to the professional profiles involved in the installation of green roofs, to provide clear instructions on the steps to follow at each stage of the installation process.
Maintenance module: training on how to preserve the different elements of green roofs: vegetation, installations, etc.
Deconstruction module, training with two main objectives: on how to deconstruct a green roof to install a new one, and how to deconstruct a common roof to install a green roof.
Online training platform: this tool will be created to improve not only the digitalization of training in the construction sector, but also the competences of its workers.
The online course, to be available in 2024, offers training in all stages of green roofs, as well as crucial information about the benefits that they produce in cities.
Why Naturbuild is interesting?
Currently, the installation of green roofs includes different professional profiles (waterproofing installers, gardeners, plumbers, etc.). The course covers the process carried out by all the trades in all the stages, including the deconstruction; and it is developed through collaborative work among consortium’s organizations, that are specialized in training and energy. Moreover, this training is focused on the solutions used in the different sub climates of Mediterranean countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece).
This project involves external organizations from the four countries, dedicated to green roofs. Experts interested in Naturbuild can send an e-mail to internationalprojects@fundacionlaboral.org.
