Ocean Energy Technologies Transformative Potential
The project aims to understand how a sustainable energy transition can drive the transformation of existing industries, focusing on the process of construction of a new system around marine renewable energy technologies in Portugal.
The research combines theoretical and empirical contributions from sustainable transitions and economic geography to investigate the nature and effects of the interplay between the emerging system and existing industries (established and new) that provide complementary resources and competences. The objective is to uncover the processes of (re)combination of new and existing knowledge that occur along this co-evolution and that can bring about industrial transformation. The spatial dimension of these processes and their implications for regional development are equally investigated. The results are discussed with key stakeholders at industry and policy levels.
