The project aims to implement a new process for biofuels and high added products production, from the marine microalga Chrypthecodinium cohnii. In addition to these lipid products, biogas and fertilizers will be produced, and part of the water consumed in the process will be recovered for irrigation purposes. The OmegaFuel project is based on the principles of the circular economy, aiming at producing zero waste. The technology here proposed may contribute for reducing the Portuguese energy dependence, as well as other EU countries, and the reduction of oil importations. It can also contribute to the achievement of the Union’s European Union 20-20-20 goals, with a 20% increase in renewable energy consumption by 2020, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.
