Methodology for the Analysis of Dynamic Capacity and Optimized Management of Electric Grids

The national project OptiGRID – Methodology for the Analysis of Dynamic Capacity and Optimized Management of Electric Grids (PTDC / EEI-EEE / 31711/2017) aims at the development of an operational tool and an integrated methodology for the Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) analysis of overhead electrical networks.

The OptiGRID project uses the capacity values from the DLR analysis to increase the transmission capacity of the overhead lines, thus allowing an increase of the renewable production levels into the existing power system, and reducing the number of hours under market splitting for the Iberian electricity market, which significantly affects the electricity prices. The additional capacity of the overhead lines can alleviate potential congestion problems that are particularly relevant for power systems presenting high penetration levels of variable renewable energy, as in the case of Portugal.
